Tesla is preparing to wind down Cybertruck production at its Gigafactory Texas plant by mid-2027, marking a major shift in the company’s electric vehicle strategy.
The Cybertruck, one of Tesla’s most controversial vehicles, has struggled to meet the ambitious expectations set before its launch. Despite attracting enormous attention with its stainless-steel body and futuristic design, the electric pickup has failed to achieve the sales volumes originally envisioned.
Cybertruck Sales Fell Short of Expectations
When Tesla introduced the Cybertruck in 2019, Elon Musk outlined ambitions for annual sales of approximately 250,000 vehicles.
However, US sales reportedly declined from 38,965 units in 2024 to 20,237 units in 2025, highlighting the gap between initial expectations and actual demand.
High pricing, an unconventional design, production complexity and multiple recalls have contributed to the challenges surrounding the model.
Tesla Shifts Its Focus to Cybercab
The decision also reflects Tesla’s growing focus on autonomous transportation.
The company plans to redirect manufacturing resources at Gigafactory Texas toward Cybercab, its purpose-built autonomous electric vehicle.
Cybercab represents a different direction for Tesla, with the company increasingly emphasizing artificial intelligence, robotics and self-driving technology.
However, Tesla has not confirmed whether Cybertruck production could continue at another facility. The announced phase-out specifically concerns its Texas manufacturing operations.
What Happens to Existing Cybertrucks?
Existing Cybertruck owners are not expected to lose vehicle support simply because production is being phased out. Nevertheless, the decision raises questions about long-term resale values, parts availability and the model’s future.
For Tesla, the Cybertruck may ultimately be remembered as one of its boldest experiments, even if it never became the mass-market success the company once anticipated.
